Sonoscan Expands Transducer Fab & Optimization

Elk Grove Village IL, March 27, 2007 -- Sonoscan, Inc., the designer, developer and manufacturer of acoustic microscopes, has recently expanded its transducer operation, where new ultra-high frequency ultrasonic transducers used in the microscopes are designed and optimized.

The dividing line between standard transducers and customized application-specific transducers is roughly the 120 MHz frequency, which is also the division point between ordinary applications and special applications,” observed Sonoscan President Dr. Lawrence W. Kessler.

From 5 MHz to 120 MHz, he pointed out, all or nearly all applications are well served by a single transducer type.  But above 120 MHz it becomes much more likely that a given application will be able to benefit from a specific transducer design.

This is why Sonoscan currently has more than a dozen different transducers all operating at 230 MHz, but each having superior properties for a given set of application requirements, such as better imaging of edges, better penetration through plastic, or better layer discrimination.

New transducers are typically designed and developed in response to specific customer needs.  The latest 230 MHz transducer, for example, was specifically designed for use with materials having very high transmission speeds.  Similar requests have guided the recent development of transducers approaching 500 MHz.

Expansion of Sonoscan’s transducer operation was brought about by increasing numbers of requests from customers, and by the recognition that the migration of acoustic microscopes into areas involving new applications, new materials and smaller geometries is likely to lead to the design of additional optimized transducers.
