Sonoscan Launches UPH-Turbo™ For High-Speed Scanning

Elk Grove Village, IL, September 15, 2005—Sonoscan, Inc., the designer and manufacturer of acoustic microscope systems, has introduced UPH-Turbo™, a new method of acoustic scanning that gives greater units-per-hour throughput for both automated and manual Sonoscan systems.

The introduction of UPH-Turbo gives Sonoscan systems the highest throughput rates available.

Acoustic microscopes work by pulsing VHF or UHF ultrasound from a scanning transducer into a part and receiving the return echoes from internal features at various depths within the part. The echoes come back only from material interfaces, and not from homogeneous materials. “Until now, the constraints on the scan rate, and on overall throughput, have been the scanner mechanism design and the transducer itself,” explained Dr. Lawrence W. Kessler, president of Sonoscan.

UPH-Turbo is a proprietary method that is most useful when making higher resolution acoustic images, Dr. Kessler added. “It’s really not needed at lower resolutions, where throughput rates are usually high anyway. UPH-Turbo gives the greatest benefit at higher resolutions, where the throughput rate is up to 2.5 times what it would be without UPH-Turbo.”

The new method increases throughput—units per hour—when used with FACTS2™, Sonoscan’s in-line automated acoustic inspection systems, which can handle thousands of parts per hour in trays. FACTS2 systems generally operate 24/7 and are dedicated to a specific application.

UPH-Turbo also increases throughput significantly for Sonoscan’s C-SAM® systems, which are widely used both in production environments where greater flexibility is needed and for laboratory analysis.
