Smart Card 3D Acoustic Microscope Image
Application Note 452
3D AMI
3D Acoustic image of a smart card, Optical image, Close up
Sample & Method

The sample is a contact-type smart card. Zip-Slice and 3V software were used on C-SAM to construct the Acoustic Solid representation of the smart card shown above. The Zip-Slice software scanned the smart card at each of 8 optimally focused depths. 3V software then stacked the slices electronically to create the Acoustic Solid, which contains all of the internal acoustic data for the smart card. The rather small number of slices could be used in this case because the smart card is thin and has few layers. The very high acoustic frequency of 230 MHz was used.

Result

The Acoustic Solid shown above has not been sectioned, and therefore shows none of the internal features, including defects, that would be visible after sectioning. Gold areas are the 8 contacts at the surface. Blue areas are the plastic package.
