Surface-Scan
With ultrasound’s high sensitivity to air space type defects (voids, cracks and delaminations) it is often useful to inspect even the surface of a sample for the presence of cracks. This ceramic disk has been inspected using two types of imaging modes. With the Surface-Scan, the ultrasound directly reflected off of the surface is captured and the crack is evident. With the surface wave scan, ultrasound is propagated along the part surface. Surface cracks exhibit high acoustic contrast in this mode.
